CHESHIRE Jets sensational move to sign LA Lakers superstar Ron Artest is gathering pace.

Jets are mounting an audacious attempt to sign Artest after he revealed via the social networking site Twitter that he would consider a move to the UK.

Shortly after news of Jets interest became public, Artest changed his profile picture on Twitter to an image of a Jets kit with his name and number on the back.

The proposed move came about because the NBA is in dispute with the basketball players union in America, meaning the start of the season usually in October could be massively delayed.

The row has led to a lockout, with players banned from playing for NBA franchises but free to play in Europe until an agreement is reached.

During the last 10 days, Jets director Pete Hawkins has spoken to Artest in a series of late-night phone calls to discuss the terms of any possible transfer.

The extrovert New Yorker, who is partway through a five-year contract with the Lakers worth $33m, is keen to come to the UK as he is looking to pursue a career in the music and film industries.

I spoke to Ron last Tuesday night, said Hawkins. I told him I wouldnt insult a man on a $33m contract by offering him cash incentives, but if we can create the right conditions for him he will bring huge benefit to the team and be able to build on his own ambitions in other areas.

Former Jets player/coach Billy Singleton, now living back in New York, is also trying to help.

Hawkins added: After we contacted Ron we realised he went to the same college as Billy.

When we contacted Billy he revealed he was coaching at a high school and coached Rons son so that has been helpful too.

The Jets are awaiting word from Artest, who, bizarrely, is in the process of changing his name to Metta World Peace, on their offer. They have spoken to movers and shakers in film and music production to facilitate the move.

Hawkins said: It is a distinct possibility he will sign but there is also a distinct possibility he wont. We have to wait and see.
