A WEST Cheshire AC member’s lifelong devotion to athletics has been rewarded.

Mike Lamb is celebrating being awarded the title of president of the Liverpool & District Cross Country Union.

The enthusiastic 70-year-old, who will carry out the role for 12 months, has served the sport for many years and is still an active coach, official and cross country secretary at Wests.

Mike, of Whitby, enjoyed running as a pupil of Wirral Grammar School and ran for the school’s cross country team.

He contributed toward a team success at the 1957 Cheshire County Championships and competed on the day his school won the Northern Schools’ title at Lyme Park, Disley.

Mike returned to running in his mid 30s and represented Ellesmere Port Athletic Club and Chester and Ellesmere Port Athletic Club before becoming a member of West Cheshire AC when the club was founded in 1998.

He achieved his targets of posting 60 minutes for 10 miles, three hours for a marathon, as well as running in a handful of ultra-distance events lasting up to 24 hours.

Mike also combined his road-running appearances by representing Wests in cross country, road relays, and track and field fixtures.

West Cheshire AC chairman Dennis Wall said: “Mike is a loyal servant to his current club where he helps organise weekly running sessions from Chester’s Northgate Arena, as well as acting as a qualified official at cross country, road running, and track and field meetings.

“He has now been appointed president of the Liverpool & District Cross Country Union, one of the oldest athletics organisations in existence after staging their first ever championships in 1891.”

Three West Cheshire AC members completed the Abergele Five Mile Road Race.

Dave Hough recorded 35 minutes 53 seconds, ahead of Brian Beattie (40:29) and fastest over 65s lady Mary Radford (48:20).
