A PAIR of West Cheshire AC youngsters will show off their skills in front of thousands of fans at the main venue for this summer’s London Olympics.
Olivia Montez-Brown and Kelly Baker have been selected to compete in the UK School Games, which is expected to attract up to 35,000 spectators.
The games take place at the Olympic Park from May 6-9 and will be the last event to be held at the East London venue before the Olympic Games opening ceremony on July 27.
The athletics event will be staged at the Olympic Stadium itself.
West Cheshire AC chairman Dennis Wall said: “Kelly and Olivia will rub shoulders with the most talented young athletes during the event, which will provide children with the opportunity to feel part of the Olympic experience.”
Olivia, 15, is ranked high in the UK under 17s women’s rankings for three events. She is 18th in the 60m hurdles, 12th in the indoor long jump and 13th in the heptathlon.
The Ellesmere Port Catholic High student won the Northern Indoor U17s long jump title in Sheffield last month after being crowned Cheshire champion in May. She also represented Cheshire at the English Schools Combined Events Championships at Exeter.
Kelly, who celebrated her 16th birthday this week, is excited at the prospect of her trip to the capital after winning the U17s women’s shot title with an 11.72m personal best at the Northern Indoor Championships in Sheffield.
Ranked third for her age group in the UK shot put rankings, the Bishops’ High School student won both the Cheshire schools and club titles last year and also celebrated success at the Inter-Counties Schools Championships.
Kelly has experience of the UK School Games. She finished third in last year’s shot put at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium.
