UPTON High and The Queen’s School came away with the two main titles at the Chester Year Seven Championships.

Upton’s young guns were victorious in the boys’ team event, while Queen’s claimed the girls’ title.

There was also joy for Christleton High pupil Jessica Renner.

The 11-year-old broke a 30-year-old competition record to win the 800m in two minutes and 35 seconds.

Jessica’s feat was one of the highlights of the annual track and field event, which was staged at Wrexham’s Queensway Stadium.

Teams from 12 Chester schools took part.

In the girls section, Georgina Alexander of The Queen’s School won the 100m (13.82secs) and long jump (4.11m), alongside other winning team-mates Jade Parker (6.41m in the shot), Olivia Williams (20.85m in the javelin, 12.92secs in the hurdles).

Beth McCarthy (Abbey Gate College) won the 200m title in 29.30secs, while Upton’s Amy Kiernan won the discus with 13.14m. The King’s School’s Rachel Huber rounded the 1,500m in a winning time of 6mins 05.0secs and Antonia Puaca (Bishops’ High) cleared a winning height of 1.25m in the high jump.

Joe Hickson and George Hassell celebrated victories for boys’ team winners Upton.

Hickson won the javelin with a throw of 24.26m and Hassell cleared 1.35m for victory in the high jump.

Tarporley’s Mark Latham grabbed glory in the 1,500m with a time of 5:04.4 and added a long-jump win of 4.40m.

Chester Catholic High’s Joe Brackenbury (9.15m in shot) and Liam Eldridge (27.82secs for 200m) celebrated victories alongside Tarporley’s George Withe (13.08secs in the 100m), Christleton’s Lewis Gerrard (17m in discus) and the Abbey Gate College duo of Will Parsons (2:35.2 for 800m) and Olly McCormick (12.33secs in hurdles).
