ATHLETICS: WEST CHESHIRE AC are inviting local athletes to enjoy a slice of the action this weekend.

The Chester and Ellesmere Port-based club are hosting open age indoor shot put and high jump at Stanney High School Sportshall, Ellesmere Port, on Sunday, from 10am. Entry is just 50p per event, payable on the day from 9.30am.

Competition organiser Dennis Wall, said: 'We are hoping the event will capture the attention and imagination of those who are new to the sport. The competitions provide a chance for school pupils to test themselves against club athletes and they also present an ideal opportunity to prepare for the outdoor track and field season.

West Cheshire men face a big task if they are to claim the Borders Road Running League team title. Only seven members turned out at Hoylake last weekend to tackle the penultimate race in the series.

West Cheshire finished sixth with 1,266 points, well adrift of winners Buckley Runners, who compiled 359 points.

Buckley lead the overall league table on 2,188 points and West Cheshire are now second overall with 2,446 points.

Dave Tiernan was the first WCAC runner home after covering the 6.1 miles course to Leasowe Lighthouse and back to finish 20th in a time of 36 minutes 18 seconds, the same time as team mate, Graham Earlam in 21st.

Frances Mudway represented WCAC in the ladies race and finished 169th overall, and 40th lady in 51:50.

Simon Shiels, of Abergele Harriers, won the men's race in 32 minutes 22 seconds, and Caroline McIlroy, of Wirral AC, won the ladies race in 37:27, ahead of second-placed Ellesmere Port Running Club member, Nicky Bird, in 38:28.

But West Cheshire veterans still lead the team competition with one round left.

The final round of the Borders Road League takes place on Friday, May 7, at the Pirelli Club, Wrexham.

Other fixtures this weekend include the North of England AA 12 and 6 Stage Road Relays at Lister Park, Bradford, tomorrow, Saturday.

West Cheshire AC are organising the Chester Spring Five Miles Road Race on Tuesday, April 6 (7pm), from Cheshire County Sports Club, Upton. Entries are being accepted by Richard Batterham, Ranelagh, School Lane, Guilden Sutton, Chester. CH3 7ET.

Tattenhall Runners had a poor turnout at the Border League race, but despite having only eight runners the men managed to hold on to fourth place in Division Two, while the ladies had a full team and remain fifth in Division One.

The men were led by Justin Realff in 57th place in 38:40, followed by Mark Smith 74th in 40:32. Sandra Owen was again first counter for the ladies in 117th place in 44:32 (second lady 55), ahead of Caroline Howard 142nd in 47:44.

Tattenhall are hosting the Christleton 5k race on May 14 and forms are available from Christleton High School.
