A FRODSHAM teenager has won her second major field archery title just two years after taking up the sport.

Becky Whittle, 15, claimed the junior girls title at the National Field Archery Society 3D Championships at Arley Hall in Northwich. Her latest win came in the American flat bow section and follows on from her maiden triumph in the Scottish Championships last year.

Dad Steve, who along with his daughter is a member of South Cheshire Field Archers in Delamere, said: “Becky has taken to the sport so easily.

“Two years ago she returned from a school trip to Tatton Park and said she wanted to take up archery having had a go.

“We went to the club and she had a real aptitude. Now she has won her second major title. If she sticks with it she could go far in this sport.”

In 3D field archery, competitors trek through a forest and, at designated pegs, aim not at a paper target but at a life-sized rubber model of a creature.

After three shots from three different positions, if you still haven’t scored you move on. As soon as you hit the target you move to the next.

Becky broke the record for the highest score in her class, making 1,114 for the two days.

The Helsby High School pupil became only the third girl ever to win the title.

In order to help others follow in Becky’s footsteps, South Cheshire Field Archers have successfully applied for £6,500 form the National Lottery Awards for All fund to buy new targets and equipment for training.

Steve added: “It is a great sport for all the family.

“Travelling to competitions and different clubs means you never know what you will be firing at next. It could be an otter or an eight-foot bear!”
