ELLESMERE Port’s Nick Roberts put in a great performance at Heronbrook Fishery in the Maver ‘Match This’ qualifier.

The Sensas Rod ‘n’ Reel team member finished fifth overall against 80 other top anglers from across the region in driving rain to qualify for August’s British Maver Pole Championships at Larford Lakes.

From peg two on Island Pool, Roberts netted 35 fish for a total of 78lbs. Most of his catch was made up of meat-feeding F1s and carp, his best being around 8lbs, taken on the method feeder.

Rod ‘n’ Reel teammate Steve Dean was in good form in Sunday’s Open match at Weston Pools, Oswestry. Dean, from Ellesmere Port, won the match with a superb 141lbs 9oz. He fished at 8m shallow and then later down the edge on caster and worm from peg 31 on Stretton Lake, bagging 53lb of F1s and 41 carp weighing 88lbs.

Mark Plevin was second with 93lbs of carp taken to shallow fished bread from peg 13 on Belvedere.

Dean was also in action at Blundells Fishery, Warrington, during last week.

Using an effective tactic of shallow-fished caster on the pole, he lured 184 fish to the net, tipping the scales at 128lbs with F1 carp to win his section and claim third place overall from peg 33 on Trio Lake.

Top rod was Chris Weeder with similar fish weighing 142lbs from peg 21 on Trio also with caster. In second was Andy Butler with 131lbs of F1s taken shallow with pellet.

Members of Rivacre AC were in action at Chester Lakes, Dodleston, on Saturday.

The water was stuffed full of small fish, providing sport for competitors throughout the match.

Top rod was Dodleston’s Mark Clutton. He used corn and pellet at 8m, 13m and in the margins of his peg for 29lbs 9oz of small carp and tench.

Ellesmere Port angler Ian Lloyd was not too far behind in second with 29lbs 5oz.

Lloyd was kept busy all day by a good number of very small tench and carp that fell to predominantly pellet fished at 5m.

Great Sutton’s James Cruikshank enjoyed a good session at Cheshire Fishing, Tattenhall. He used a variety of baits including floating bread crust, corn and pellet to tempt some good fish. He netted five good carp of up to 5lbs along with roach and bream, finishing finish with a bag in excess of 60lbs.
