Merseyside Nighthawks won the game with seconds left when an 80 yard kick off return was halted on the goal line.

Romans defence stood strong but could not prevent the hosts landing the field goal to take a two point lead, which was enough to take the spoils.

Chester began the game well and took the lead when running back James Tootle claimed the opening touchdown, although the PAT was blocked.

Nighthawks recovered and marched down field to move into the lead with a touchdown and successful PAT.

Romans regained the upper hand with a field goal from 40 yards but the Merseysiders hit back with a second touchdown to take a 14-9 lead.

Wide receiver Rory Mansfield got Chester back in front with a touchdown, slicing through the defence but the PAT failed.

Nighthawks punished a fumble in the third period to move into a 20-15 lead but the visitors were able to find the perfect response.

Romans crossed for a TD and looked to have made a two point conversion but the officials ruled the ball short.

Nighthawks sensed their chance and a weaving kick off return gave them the chance to steal the win.
