Steve Burr has been heartened with the progress the Blues have made and has challenged them to keep on improving.

Chester are five points better off than at the same stage last season and can make it three successive league wins for the first time since April 2013 against Grimsby Town on Saturday (3pm).

Grimsby lost out to Gateshead in the play-offs last season and were fancied to be in the promotion mix again but have made an indifferent start.

Burr saw them grind out a 1-0 win at Kidderminster Harriers on the weekend but dropped points at home to struggling Dover Athletic and Nuneaton Town provide some hope.

Burr said: “I watched Grimsby on Saturday at Kiddy and it’ll be a tough game there, it always is, but I feel that we are improving as the season goes on.

“We’ll go there and try and win the game as we always do but we know how tough it’s going to be against Grimsby.”

Last season Chester went down 2-1 at Blundell Park but the Blues will go there with greater belief on this occasion.

Winger Scott Neilson, who has five goals in eight appearances, will be the main danger and the frustrating Lennell John-Lewis can be a handful, although he has been struggling for fitness.

Four-goal Jon-Paul Pittmann misses out but Rhys Oates, signed on loan from Barnsley, netted on his debut at Kiddy. Conference North title-winner Scott Brown faces his former club, as does Jack Mackreth.

Burr will have some decisions to make around his team selection after impressive cameos from Ibou Touray and Wayne Riley in the win over Wrexham.

He now seems to have settled on his favoured selection and hopes there will further improvement to come as partnerships continue to be developed.

Burr said: “There are some good signs there now and we just want to keep improving as we go on.”

Chester remain in the market for a new striker to take some of the pressure of Craig Hobson, who has copped some rough treatment from opposition defenders.

Burr continues to run the rule over trialists in training but will need to free up some room in his budget for a new addition.

“I’d still like to do something so we’ll keep working away at it and see what we can do,” said Burr.
