Almost £50,000 has been raised for charity in memory of the much-loved Chester dad and football coach Danny Jones.

His wife Tara handed over a cheque as schools from across Chester and beyond came together to contest the The Danny Jones Cup in tribute to the father-of-two, who lost his fight with a brain tumor almost 12 months ago .

Danny, from Boughton , battled the tumour for two-and-a-half-years before he passed away at the age of 31 in Tara's arms on March 28, 2015.

Over the past 12 months Tara and Danny's friends and family, including his daughter Holly and son Franklin, have been raising funds for Brain Tumour Research and Franklin’s Star, the charity Tara set up in Danny’s name.

Fifteen schools gathered at the Goals Soccer Centre on Tuesday to take part in what will be an annual tournament in his honour.

Danny worked for Chester City as a community coach before setting up his own business with friend Steve Reddy coaching football to schools across West Cheshire.

Steve organised the Danny Jones Cup as a lasting tribute to his friend and invited some of the schools where Danny coached to take part.

Tara and Holly presented trophies to the winners and runners-up before handing over a cheque for £47,067 to Brain Tumour Research.

Before the five-a-side tournament kicked off, players, parents, teachers and coaches, almost all of whom who knew Danny, completed a minute's applause in his honour.

The action on the pitch was competitive with schools split into three leagues with the top teams going through to the latter stages.

In the end it was Mickle Trafford Primary School and Mill View Primary School who faced each other in the final.

Mickle Trafford emerged victorious and captain Archie Ford collected the Danny Jones Cup to take back to his school.

Steve presented a special trophy to Mill View's Joel Jones as the player of the tournament.
