YORK City boss Gary Mills accepted Chester FC fully deserved a share of the spoils in Saturday's 1-1 Vanarama National League draw between the sides.

York seemed set to record their first win in 10 games in all competitions when Matt Fry headed in to end Chester's club record run of 738 minutes without conceding a league goal.

But the Blues got the equaliser their second-half dominance deserved when super-sub Kane Richards struck in injury-time.

Richards' third goal of the season stretched Chester's unbeaten league run to eight matches and ensured Mills' homecoming ended on a flat note.

But the former Wrexham manager, who was taking charge of his first home game since returning to Bootham Crescent, had no real complaints.

Mills said: "We didn't dominate the game, they did.

"They hit the woodwork two or three times, they played well and you could see why they're doing well in the league.

"It's always disappointing to lose a 90th-minute goal but to be honest it wasn't as if they didn't deserve it.

"If we had dominated the game and missed chances then that would have hurt a little bit more.

"I've asked the players for big hearts and I thought they worked really hard but their understanding of the game has to be better and we need to keep the ball better.

"We can't keep giving it back to the opposition, particularly a team like Chester who have got some good players who can hurt you.

"But I learned a lot and we've got a point. Now we have to pick up some more."
