After netting his first goal in senior football the last time he pulled on a Chester FC shirt, Oliver McBurnie has got the hunger for more – starting with this weekend’s trip to Lincoln City.

McBurnie, 18, joined the Blues on a month-long loan from League One side Bradford City last month and got himself off the mark in his career with a 38th-minute header in Chester’s 3-1 win at Welling United on January 31.

After making 14 appearances for the Bantams before joining Steve Burr’s charges, McBurnie had failed to find the target but believes the goals will flow now he has broken his goalscoring duck.

“It was a long time coming for me but it was an immense feeling to get that first goal,” said McBurnie, whose loan spell is due to end with the Blues on February 22.

“It is a massive confidence boost for me,” he added. “I had pals texting me and sending me screen shots of my name on Sky Sports News.

“Hopefully now that I’m off the mark, I can go and bang a few more in for Chester while I’m here. If I can do the same this weekend, I’ll be happy.”

Despite having only been around his Blues team-mates for three weeks, McBurnie says he feels right at home and believes the quality the squad possesses makes a play-off bid a real possibility.

“The lads have been ledge in helping me to settle and being welcoming and I’ve loved it here so far,” he said. “It’s a great club.”

“There are some top players here and the gaffer has them playing football the right way.

“I’m a player that likes to get in central positions and get on the end of crosses and when you have guys like Sean (McConville), Craig (Mahon) and Matty (Hughes) in wide areas, it makes my job a lot easier.

“Maybe I’m being a little bit naive but there’s no reason why we can’t make the play-offs.

“We have shown we can grind out results against good teams, like we did against Kidderminster, and I know how much quality there is in this side.

“We’re full of confidence and go into every game thinking we can get the three points. The play-offs is a realistic ambition for the club this season. That’s our aim.”

McBurnie hasn’t ruled out extending his stay with the Blues beyond next week, revealing his Bradford boss Phil Parkinson was keen for the young striker to cut his teeth at the Swansway Chester Stadium.

“I was hoping to go out on loan in November but left it a little late, but when this window came round, Chester were interested,” he said.

“The gaffer (Parkinson) told me Chester were a great fit for me because they’re a quality footballing side and Steve Burr was a great manager who did things the right way. It was a no-brainer for me to come here.

“I’ve not given it much thought but I’d love to stay longer if I could. I’m enjoying playing my football here but we’ll have to wait and see.”
