Chester FC salvaged a point at the death in a breathless six-goal thriller at Guiseley, but they remain firmly in a relegation battle in the National League.

After Ross Hannah had given the Blues the lead on 39 minutes, a crazy last 15 minutes saw Guiseley take the lead three times before Tom Shaw levelled at the death.

Emile Sinclair restored parity for the Lions before Will Hatfield gave them an 81 minute lead. Substitute Kane Richards levelled with his first touch on 83 minutes before Sinclair grabbed a second in the last minute of normal time.

But Shaw popped up at the death to rescue Steve Burr's men and earn them a share of the spoils against one of their relegation rivals.

While the expectation pre-game may have been one of a tentative start, both teams came out with intent and looked to grab the bull by the horns early on.

Anthony Dudley and the dangerous James Hurst both went close with long-range efforts in the opening 20 minutes while John Rooney, Hannah and Ryan Higgins all threatened Drench's goal from distance.

But the Blues were the team to strike first when Hannah found the net on 39 minutes.

Tom Shaw won the ball for the Blues with a fierce challenge to set Ryan Lloyd on his way, with the on-loan Port Vale midfielder threading a through ball to Hannah who made no mistake from 10 yards to fire past Drench.

Chester had the chance to double there advantage just before the break when Rooney's corner found Sam Hughes, but the teenager couldn't connect with a free header. The ball then found its way out wide where James Alabi did well to wrestle back possession and cross for Ben Heneghan who headed over from point blank range when he really should have found the net.

But, as happened during Saturday's desperately disappointing 2-1 loss at home to Barrow, it was a game of two halves for Chester.

Rooney and Hannah both went close for Chester but Guiseley started to assert themselves on the contest as the game wore on with Gavin Rothery twice testing the recalled Worsnop.

And the Lions' pressure paid off on 74 minutes when a deep Dudley corner found an unmarked Sinclair at the far post, with the Guiseley striker flicking a header into the top corner.

Substitute Oli Johnson and Hurst both went close as the home side seized the initiative and they found themselves ahead on 81 minutes when Hatfield poked home from close range from a low cross following a Ryan Astles mistake.

But the lead was to last less than two minutes when Kane Richards levelled things up with his first touch having come on as a substitute just seconds before.

He side-footed home from close range after a Blues counter attack had caused havoc in the Lions box.

But Chester fans were left fearing the worst on 89 minutes when Sinclair gave Guiseley the lead once again, tapping home from close range after Dudley had broken on the left and the Blues defence was left backpeddalling.

It looked as if it was to be another disappointing finale for the Blues but, with seconds left, pandemonium in the Lions area saw Hannah and Heneghan both scuff efforts before Shaw scrambled home a leveller to spark joyous scenes in the away end.

But nothing could mask a second half where the Blues proved the architects of their own downfall once again. They are not out of the woods yet, not by a long way.

Talking points

Jon Worsnop's return: Number one for much of the season, Worsnop has been out of favour in recent weeks, with Tony Thompson preferred instead. Worsnop did well to keep out a number of stinging Lions efforts and wasn't at fault for any of the goals conceded.

Second-half syndrome: Just as happened against Barrow on Saturday, Chester shot themselves in the foot with an abject second-half showing. Unless they can put together a 90-minute shift, they will be nervously looking over their shoulder on the last day of the season.

Verdict

A grandstand finish can't mask an inept second-half display and little would have been done to ease relegation worries after today. A good first half, poor second, Chester repeated their mistakes of Saturday against Barrow and failed to kill of one of their relegation rivals.

The Blues have a favourable run-in compared to their rivals, but unless they can see out games then the relegation battle could well go down to the wire.
