A second-half hat-trick from striker Jordan Rugg ensured Motors eased into the next round of the FA Cup.

The scoreline, however, was not a fair reflection on the game as Chorley had the better of the first half and, overall, Rugg was the only difference between the two sides.

Vauxhall’s reward was to be handed a trip to Evo-Stik League South outfit Carlton Town in the third qualifying round, with the tie taking place on Saturday, October 12 (3pm).

Fourteen minutes into Saturday’s game, Chorley almost went ahead when a Dale Whitham header went inches wide of the left-hand post. Keil O’Brien and Adam Mather also went close in the first half, but were denied by keeper Zac Jones.

After the interval, Chorley continued to look dangerous on the break, with Darren Stephenson twice racing clear – only to be stopped in his tracks by last-ditch challenges from Karl Clair and Andy Nicholas.

Motors took the lead on 70 minutes when substitute Karl Noon delivered a fine right-wing cross which was flicked on by Nicholas and Ashley Stott was on hand to head home from six yards.

Rugg made it 2-0 six minutes later when he robbed the ball off Mark Ross on the left then cut inside and rifled the ball past Sam Ashton from close range.

The Motors’ marksman scored the goal of the game on 80 minutes, with his back to goal he turned from 20 yards out and hit a left-footed screamer into the far corner of the net which went in off the post beyond the helpless Ashton.

Rugg completed his hat-trick with six minutes remaining when he danced through the tired Chorley defence before blasting the ball past Ashton from just inside the area.
