CHESTER'S director of football Gordon Hill was involved in ugly scenes during his side's 3-0 'friendly' victory over Connah's Quay Nomads.

Police were called to Deeside Stadium to calm angry City fans, who aimed a barrage of abuse at the former Manchester United and England winger last Thursday.

Hill, in charge of Chester for the first time, was spat on as he emerged from the changing rooms after half-time as visiting supporters chanted the name of sacked manager Graham Barrow.

Nomads' secretary Bobby Hunter, who called the police during the interval, said: 'We had eight stewards on duty, but I felt it was necessary to call in the police for some extra help.

'It was like the Battle of Little Bighorn when they all arrived - we're not used to that sort of thing in the League of Wales!

'They did manage to calm things down a little, but I was happy when the ref blew his whistle at the end of the match.'

Centre-back Martyn Lancaster broke the deadlock after 23 minutes, looping a header over Nomads' keeper Paul Whitfield from a Shaun Gormer free-kick.

The impressive Scott Ruscoe doubled the visitors' lead 10 minutes after the restart with a 15-yard drive. And Mark Beesley sealed the win on 68 minutes, firing home from the penalty spot after substitute Jimmy Haarhoff was upended by Steve Hopkins.
