Tony Gray was the match-winner as Chester claimed the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time in 81 years by beating their league rivals at a blustery Wincham Park.

A final spoiled by the conditions was goalless until Antoni Sarcevic converted a 40th-minute penalty awarded after Joel Bembo-Leta was sent off.

Ten-man Celtic levelled the contest in the 59th minute through Chris Hall.

But less than a minute later Gray produced a moment of pure skill to ensure the Blue Square Bet North champions completed a double or according to Neil Young, a treble as his side won the Northern Premier League Peter Swales Shield at the start of the campaign.

Blues boss Young said: Its a treble, not a double!

Its put a top hat on the season for us and Im delighted for the players and the supporters.

It was a great finish from Tony and it was a goal good enough to win any cup final.

No team has felt Chesters wrath more this season than Stalybridge.

Jim Harveys men lost the league encounters between the sides 6-2 and 4-1.

But they didnt appear to be heading for another defeat until Bembo-Leta was dismissed for a professional foul.

Up until that both teams struggled to cope with a strong swirling wind that made it impossible for any meaningful football to be played.

Chances were at a premium with the Blues best opening falling to Danny Williams.

The winger collected a clever back-heel from Marc Williams before wriggling free and seeing his close-range effort saved by Alex Cairns.

At the other end Hall fired a dangerous cross-shot across the area before Martin Fearon got down low at his near post to deny Lewis Hatch.

The game needed a goal and it got one five minutes before the break.

The powerful Sarcevic burst clear of the Celtic defence to chase down a raking Matty McGinn pass and, just as he was about to shoot, he was hauled down in the box by Bembo-Leta.

It was a definite red card and a definite spot-kick, which Sarcevic dispatched in confident fashion, side-footing his attempt low and hard in off the post to take his tally for the term up to 17.

Marc Williams and Gray would have doubled advantage had it not been for the increasingly busy Cairns.

It came against the run of play, then, when Stalybridge equalised.

Hall showed speed to race on to a long ball over the top and strength and skill to turn Lewis Turner inside out before poking the ball under Fearon, Chesters goalkeeper for the competition.

Parity did not last long.

Cairns attempted clearance was charged down by the 14-goal Gray, who showed speed of thought to turn and send in a brilliant curling shot from the byline that the stranded Stalybridge keeper could only watch and admire as it raced over his line.

That was the way it stayed although Fearon came to Dom Collins rescue after the centre-backs miss-kick let in Hall.
