As a contest, this game ended on half time when the Blues made wholesale changes but up until then Steve Burr would have been pleased with what he saw.

Wolves sent a strong squad from the West Midlands and the home side competed well in the first half before conceding twice in three minutes.

Chester moved the ball around well and there were pleasing performances from Kingsley James, Peter Winn and others that bode well for the new season.

With the first league game looming and a bug in the camp, the manager wanted to avoid taking risks and named a bigger squad than normal, although not all made the official teamsheet.

His starting side included 34-year-old centre back Mike Edwards, on the lookout for a new club after leaving Carlisle United.

Although the fixture was a development game for Wolves, the squad included a handful of internationals and no shortage of Premier League and Football League.

Jamie O'Hara, Kevin Doyle, Kevin Foley and Stephen Ward all featured along with some promising talents, some of whom might tempt Burr into making use of his Molineux connections with good performances.

It was no surprise to see the Championship side keep the ball well in the opening few minutes but there was only one half-chance, which Liam McAlinden fired wide from 20 yards.

Kingsley James - given a licence to get forward with Danny Harrison in the team - teed up John Rooney on 12 minutes but his strike from range missed the mark.

Chester began to see more possession and James' persistence created another chance on 20 minutes with Winn sending a fizzing a shot wide from the corner of the box.

Wolves seemed short on ideas in forward areas with Doyle a peripheral figure until he released McAlinden 10 minutes before half time, but Kieran Charnock made a good cover tackle.

Winn looked the biggest threat for the home side and he rolled the ball into Rooney's path on 37 minutes but his curling shot was comfortable for keeper Aaron McCarey.

Wolves went ahead on 41 minutes when O'Hara created some space in the area and drilled a low left-foot shot under the diving Jon Worsnop and into the bottom corner.

Chester had been on top when the deadlock was broken but found themselves two goals down inside three minutes from another raid down the left wing.

David Davis knocked a clever pass into Doyle, and the Ireland international smashed the ball past Worsnop from 15 yards to give his side a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Burr made 10 changes for the second period, with Freddy Hall taking over in goal and John Disney, Liam Blake, Jamie Menagh, Wayne Riley, Sean McConville, Tom Batten, Calum Woods and Fortnam-Tomlinson coming on along with an unknown trialist in midfield.

Wolves were much the same and it took them only eight minutes to find another goal with McAlinden sending a low shot in off the post from 12 yards.

Chester should have gone four down on the hour mark when Edwards gave the ball straight to McAlinden but he and O'Hara wasted the chance with Hall standing his ground well.

After an entertaining first half, the changes - although understandable - effectively meant the contest became a training game.

Having looked ragged, the Blues did manage to find more of a shape and looked to move the ball around, although one sensed Wolves could have gone through the gears.

Hall denied McAlinden a second and then made a smart save from Eusebo Bancessi but the Bermudan couldn't keep out O'Hara's 25-yarder on 77 minutes.

Few would have begrudged the Blues the consolation goal that arrived on 81 minutes when youth team defender Woods bundled home after a goalmouth scramble.

Both sides looked content to wait for the full-time whistle in the closing minutes and focus now switches to the serious business of a new league campaign.
