If the win in Essex last week gave the Blues the belief that this season would not be like the last, this dismal performance did the exact opposite.

Halifax will, on this evidence, be right up there come the end of the season but the ease with which this win was secured is a serious concern.

Chester were bullied out of the contest in the first 20 minutes and completely ineffective in forward areas, managing only one shot on target in 90 minutes.

Two home games, two defeats, eight goals conceded and none scored tells its own story and serious improvement must be found and fast.

Chester had something to prove to the home fans after the disastrous display in the opening match, although performances since had pointed to that being a one-off.

A good show in defeat at Forest Green Rovers had offered encouragement, and the Blues followed that with the fine win at Braintree Town.

Steve Burr made one change with the fit-again Michael Kay taking the place of John Disney at right back. John Rooney and Kingsley James has been doubts but recovered and Peter Winn, who became a father the previous evening, started.

Halifax came unstuck in the play-offs last season but that disappointment hasn't affected them with three straight wins representing an excellent start for Neil Aspin's side.

Richard Peniket and Jamie Jackson came into the starting side after impressing off the bench in the 3-0 win over Welling United.

Burr had warned his team must stop taking so long to get going and another slow start here went unpunished.

Peniket blasted over from 10 yards in the second minute and moments later Paul Marshall dispossessed a dawdling Craig Mahon but his shot was saved.

Fax pinned the hosts deep into their own territory early on and showed the confidence you'd expect from an unbeaten side.

Chester gave possession away too cheaply, allowing the visitors back four and midfield to get the ball forward quickly to the dangerous front three of Scott Boden, Peniket and Jackson.

Boden had the ball in the net on 15 minutes but referee Darren England had already awarded the Blues a free kick for a foul on Kieran Charnock in the lead up.

A decent cross from Mahon and a long ranger from Rooney that flew well wide was about all the home side could muster.

Hall was called into action on a few occasions, clutching Steve Williams' volley and then getting down well to flick behind a Jackson shot from the edge of the area.

It was frustrating stuff for the home side, who were struggling for the ball and unable to make good use of the limited possession that came their way.

Chester battled hard to keep the scores level but the resistance was broken on 34 minutes when the defence couldn't clear and Peniket swept the ball into the far corner.

Fax had more hunger and desire across the park and will have been disappointed not to have more to show given how one-sided the game was.

Chester were restricted to long range strikes with Winn and Rooney missing the mark before Sean McConville created a good chance for Mahon, but his low shot was comfortable for Matt Glennon.

At the other end, Boden looked certain to score but a last-ditch Matty Brown tackle diverted his strike behind and kept the lead to a single goal.

As he had done in the win at Braintree, Burr brought on Ben Heneghan for the second half with Gareth Roberts making way.

Fax weren't quite as dominant in the second period but the Blues were lacking the inspiration to trouble the visitors and needed a spark.

Mahon went off for Jamie Menagh and a half-decent penalty appeal was turned down after the ball appeared to strike Marc Roberts' arm.

McConville worked a good opening on 62 minutes but his shot on the turn went wide and then Boden teed up Pearson down the other end but his strike hit the side-netting.

Fax were finding things far too comfortable and a second goal arrived on 70 minutes when Roberts' long pass found Boden, who had drifted off his marker, and he steered his header past Hall.

Craig Hobson came on for the final 12 minutes but the game had gone and the visitors could sense another goal, which arrived with sevent minutes to go.

A long pass from deep caught the defence napping and Matty Pearson was allowed a clear run on goal before sliding the ball between Hall's legs and wrap up the points.
