Jon Worsnop didn’t want this season to finish before the Easter weekend began – but the keeper admits that has now changed.

Chester conceded nine goals in a nightmare 72 hours, Bristol Rovers thrashing them 5-1 on Good Friday before a 4-1 thumping to Forest Green Rovers on Easter Monday.

A ‘heartbroken’ Worsnop has dismissed talk the squad are in holiday mode but in a frank assessment of his individual performances and those of the team, he accepts there’s a big repair job required.

“Before last weekend I didn’t want the season to end because I was enjoying my football so much but to be honest it can’t come around quick enough,” said Worsnop.

“I don’t mean that in a bad way and we’ve got three games to make up for it but I do feel like we need to regroup and take stock of where we are at.

“Take nothing away, we’ve played two top teams who are up there with big budgets but there’s no doubt we’ve been going through the motions and a lot of the goals we have conceded could have been prevented.

“You defend from the front and as a team we’ve not been doing enough and it’s a bit like a domino effect. If one person doesn’t it, someone else has to and that means the shape ends up all over the place.”

Worsnop, 32, says he is aware that some fans think the players have stopped trying.

“That’s not the case at all but I think we have been a bit powder-puff and too nice,” he admitted. “Good teams punish the slightest mistake and if you’re not 110% up for the game it’s going to get highlighted and it has with us shipping four and five goals.

“I’ve conceded 12 goals in three games and that’s heartbreaking for me because the first thing people do is look at the goalkeeper and start criticising them.

“People can say ‘he doesn’t come for enough crosses’ or ‘he punches when he can catch’ but I will catch when I can and I’ll punch if it’s safer and that’s what a lot of keepers do these days.

“I’ll hold my hands up when I make a mistake. I watched David De Gea make a mistake and he’s on £100,000 a week so everyone makes them.

“I should have had the fourth goal at Bristol and I said that to the lads in the dressing room and I know some people said I should have had Forest Green’s second but for me that was a brilliant header and the lad should never have had that much freedom.”

Chester have collected just five points from the last 27 on offer but Worsnop insists the squad are capable of turning that round and taking nine points from the final three games, starting with Dover Athletic at home on Saturday (3pm).

“We want to finish the season on a high and with smiles on our faces,” said Worsnop.

“The last three games are winnable on paper with the players we have and the performances we’ve had the season. If we can win them all then what’s happened will be forgotten and maybe that would be papering over the cracks a little bit.

“The weekend has been a reality check and a shock to the system but this year has been a great learning curve and it shows how much we still need to improve.”
