Wrexham boss Gary Mills has revealed he is hopeful of bringing bodies back into his squad but is prepared to wait until the 11th hour before naming his team to face Chester FC in this weekend's cross-border derby.

Jim McCarthy and his side are expected to face a much-changed Dragons XI this weekend following their disappointing defeat to Woking last weekend and, ahead of Saturday's televised clash, he opened up on whether midfielder Robbie Evans will be fit for selection.

Mills has deployed Hamza Bencherif as a defensive midfielder recently and may opt to do so again this weekend, but believes Evans' ball-winning abilities will be crucial in a derby game.

"I think we have gone down the route of trying to get Robbie right without surgery, so it is an important week," he said.

“We will have a good week training and if he comes through that with no recurrence of anything, we are still in that fingers crossed section that it is going to be cured by the rest that he has had and the treatment he has had rather than surgery.

Gary Mills will not be rushed into picking his Wrexham side to face Chester

“But certainly we’ve missed a little bit in midfield of winning second balls and being able to play with the ball, we’ve lacked a bit of that. We know that is what Robbie is all about. He thrives on that, I am hoping he has a good week in training to make a big decision for me again, give me the headache of do I start him on Saturday.”

Mills also discussed the prospect of Callum Powell and Michael Bakare featuring this weekend, but will assess how each player reacts to the next two days of training before making a definite decision on players suffering from knee and hamstring injuries respectively.

“We’ve got Powell and Bakare back training with us today, so we’ve got a couple more bodies back which is obviously good news," Mills added.

“He (Powell) did well at Maidstone, I thought he didn’t play well first half, regardless of an injury, against Sutton, and that is where we are with Callum. He is learning the game and he has got to be consistent with what he does, but it is nice to have him back.

“He has got hat bit of pace about him, same as Bakare, they are the two that have got he pace about them, so we have to see how they get through training and then it is decision time for me."
