THE fact that Motormen keeper Tim Dittmer had only a single save to make in this game, yet his side still lost, sums up just how disappointing things were for the visitors on Saturday.

Manager Owen Brown said: 'We were on top without ever creating many clear-cut chances and ultimately a scrappy goal settled a scrappy game. It's been a tough week for us as we're suffering with injuries to Peter Cumiskey, James Glendenning and Karl O'Donnell which makes things difficult when you're operating on the lowest budget in the league.'

With Worcester starting the day a point above the visitors and looking for their first victory in nine matches, this game was as important to them as it was to Vauxhall and the strains of The Great Escape blasted out over the public address system.

Meanwhile, replacement referee John Holbrook was always on a loser after the stadium announcer told the St George's Lane faithful that the official came from 'a little village near Birmingham' called Kidderminster - cue 90 minutes of pure pantomime booing.

The Motormen really should have taken an early lead when Anthony Wright headed down a Robbie Lawton free-kick from the left but defender Phil Brazier somehow blasted over the bar from close range.

The only goal of the game came 16 minutes in when striker Leon Kelly was picked out by a ball upfield from John Snape.

Left one-on-one with his opponent, the thought that he was playing his first game back after serving a suspension for clattering a striker, perhaps went through Dittmer's mind.

The Vauxhall custodian seemed to make a halfhearted challenge, allowing Kelly to round him and slot the ball into the empty net.

Steve McNulty almost levelled before the break but his left foot hook shot was turned around the post by James Coates and neither side were able to fashion any opportunities of note for most of the second half.

The Motormen had a couple of opportunist efforts to earn a share of the spoils late on but substitutes James Parry and Chris Noone were both off target.

Vauxhall: Dittmer, Woodyatt, McDermott, Spellman, McNulty, Brazier, Nesbitt (Noone 70), Lawton (Parry 83), A Wright (Griffiths 70), Olsen, D Wright. Attendance: 823.
