John Rooney says that he and his Chester FC team-mates knew just what was at stake for the weekend derby with Wrexham.

Rooney struck a stunning 30-yard free-kick to open the scoring on 35 minutes on Saturday, with his strike added to by Tom Shaw and Kane Richards to hand Chester well-deserved 3-2 win over their arch rivals.

"We've got some good characters in the squad and they knew what this game was about and they certainly rose to the occasion," said Rooney.

"The likes of me and Kayzy (Michael Kay) have played in these games and Johnny Hunt has played in them for Wrexham against Chester so he knows what it means to the fans. I thought we all stood up to the test."
