Chester FC have signed goalkeeper Connor Roberts as a replacement for Freddy Hall, who left the club this week.

Roberts, 21, moved to Everton from Tranmere Rovers aged 15 and spent four years with the Premier League club, signing his first professional contract in 2011.

He had loan spells at Burscough and Colwyn Bay but switched to Cheltenham Town after being released in 2012.

Wrexham-born Roberts, who hails from St Martin's near Chirk, made one senior appearances in two seasons with the Robins but left Waddon Road in May.

He had a trial spell with Vanarama Conference rivals Wrexham last month but has been training with the Blues since last week.

Roberts, who has six caps for Wales Under-21s, was named in the senior national squad to face the Netherlands in May.

He will be included in the Blues squad for the trip to Gateshead on Saturday (3pm) and will compete with Jon Worsnop for the number one shirt.

Bermudan international Hall, who was playing for free, had established himself as first choice keeper but left on Tuesday after the club was unable to offer him a suitable contract.
