Newsham PH 0, Chester City Ladies 1: CHESTER collected a slender victory on Merseyside, which kept alive their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Northern Conference.
The vital goal came on 35 minutes. A free-kick lofted in by Isobel Pollard from the Chester right was met by the rising Nicola Dunn on the edge of the Newsham goal area, and her header flew into the roof of the net to give Margaret Jordan in the Newsham goal no chance.
They should have doubled the lead on half-time, but Lisa Pritchard fired over from the penalty spot after Newsham defender Rossiter had been sent off for deliberate handball.
The result could have been move decisive for the Chester girls had Doncaster beaten Leeds, who had the better of a 10-goal thriller, winning 6-4, to remain seven points behind the Blues with just one game in hand.
Chester will travel to Leeds on Sunday, April 25, but first Leeds have a tricky match at Blackpool this Sunday.
Blackpool beat Leeds 2-0 just a week ago and a similar defeat at the Seasiders could spell relegation for Leeds and see Chester all but secure their Northern Combination status for next season. Chester Ladies Reserves won their friendly fixture against North West Division Three side Frodsham Rangers.
After being two goals behind at half-time, Chester came back to win 4-3 with goals from Amie Noale, Kelly Johnson, Melissa Anderson and Katie Wilson.
