Steve Burr rates the Chester FC performance in the 1-0 win at Torquay United as one the best on the road this season.

George Thomson's goal, his first for the club since his January move from Kings Lynn Town, in the 30th minute clinched a welcome three points following consecutive defeats.

Burr said: "It was a really good performance, probably one of our best performances away from home this season. Particularly in the first-half, I thought we were excellent and some of the football that we played was good.

"We've come up against a side who I thought earlier on in the season were one of the best sides I've seen in the league so it's pleasing on the back of two narrow defeats to get back to winning ways."

Earlier on in the season, Torquay looked capable of mounting a strong challenge to return to the Football League but a dreadful run has seen them drop to 15th.

Chester have improved through the campaign, although losses to Eastleigh and Wrexham threatened to derail the bid to finish in the top half, which would be a notable achievement given last season's woes.

"I don't think it was a question of stopping the rot, it was a question of getting back to winning ways," said Burr.

"The last couple of games was not what we've been used to with the four wins we'd had prior to that.

"The pitch is quite decent at Torquay and it's good to play on and trying to play football on Wrexham's pitch was very difficult.

"I said to the lads 'look, we didn't adapt in the game on Saturday to the conditions and whatever the conditions are tonight we have to adapt' and we did that. I just thought all round we dominated, the back four was excellent.

"We went to a 4-4-2 and we brought George in because we are going to be looking between now and the end of the season to keep things nice and fresh and moving the side around a little bit.

"We had a couple of injury problems going into the game missing Sean McConville and Matty Hughes was a little bit of a doubt but it was a great to see George come in and get his goal, and to be honest he could have had one or two others.

"We knew Torquay would come out of the blocks in the second-half but I thought we coped with everything really and Jon Worsnop when called upon was excellent.

"That was the way we'd worked on things on Monday in training about being nice and strong, and as a unit working hard and you could see that and not only that some of the football was excellent."
