Tonight's game between Chester FC and Southport brings together two teams searching for form.

The Blues, who went down 3-2 at home to Lincoln City at the weekend, have slid down the National League table after a promising start and a third straight loss will have fans looking for the panic button.

Third-bottom Southport have the worst attack in the division and manager Paul Carden knows his team cannot afford to fall too far behind.

With both sides desperate to avoid defeat, it could be a nerve-shredding evening at the Merseyrail Community Stadium (7.45pm).

The Chronicle's Jim Green highlights three duels that have the potential to decide the outcome:

Ross Hannah v Luke Foster

Sandgrounders skipper Luke Foster is a no-nonsense centre back with huge experience. The 30-year-old, who could fill a golf bag with 14 clubs to his name, will have an important role tonight.

Southport have conceded four times at home on two occasions and that should give Chester hope, particularly with the Blues starting to score goals.

Foster's not the quickest over the ground and it's crucial the Blues plant Hannah on his shoulder and look to get the ball in behind for the ex-Grimsby Town striker to run onto.

Hannah showed in the second-half against Lincoln what he can do when given decent service. He's been starved of that for the most part but tonight could be the night he catches fire.

Ian Sharps v Cole Stockton

Sharps started his career with Tranmere Rovers and in Stockton he will come up against a talented if enigmatic forward on loan from Prenton Park.

The 21-year-old's career hasn't hit the heights it was expected too but his three goals in five games for Southport underlines the threat he can pose when in the mood.

For a long-in-the-tooth defender like Sharps, the fact Chester have allowed 13 goals in five games will be painful and the 34-year-old will want to put that right and keep Stockton quiet.

John Rooney v Charlie Joyce

With veteran midfielder Gary Jones suspended, Joyce should start in his place for the third game in a row.

The 22-year-old has been with the club since 2012 making him the longest serving player but it was over the back half of last season that he really started to establish himself.

Carden has praised his attitude and workrate, and he'll be tasked with stopping Chester's midfield settling on the ball this evening.

Rooney has been an ever present this season and the Blues will need him at his best tonight because results tend to follow when he's able to be an influence on proceedings.

He's not a universal favourite but there's no question he's the one man in the team who can unlock defences and create chances for those around them, as well as contributing his trademark set-pieces.
