REVENGE was sweet for newly-crowned South Wirral League Robin Hodgson Division champions Bebington Athletic, who stormed into the Robin Hodgson Cup final after beating Avon Athletic 5-2.

A week earlier, Avon had stolen a march on the champions by knocking them out od the South Wirral League Challenge Cup semi-final, but Saturday told a different tale as Bebington, inspired by Ben Jenner, bossed the tie to post an impressive win.

Bebington led through an own goal but Jenner picked up the cudgel to impose his presence on the game with a four-goal salvo to steer his side through. Paul Coventry bagged both replies for the Widnes outfit.

With the title now safely in Bebington's hands, the race is on for the runners-up medals. And up to a week ago, four clubs were mathematically still in with a shout.

Midweek results, however, have now swung the pendulum in Avon's favour, and after Coventry hit the game's only goal to kill off Black Horse's challenge, Avon are now almost home and dry.

Mersey Ferries maintained interest but were made to work hard to gain a 2-0 win over Rangers Breaks on Wednesday last week, Carl Billington and James Fell netting a goal either side of the half.

Ferries' chances were then dealt a crippling blow on Saturday as they were erased from the runners-up equation after being undone by a goal from Leasowe Castle's Tommy Walker.

Victory against Rangers Breaks in tomorrow's encounter would guarantee Avon second spot, while Bebington complete their programme with the visit of Black Horse and Mersey Ferries host Pavilions.
