CHESTER CITY'S chances of signing the Oxford United goalkeeper Ian McCaldon lessened last night with the news that Scottish Premier League side Livingston had approached the player with a view to offering him a contract.

City boss Mark Wright said last night: "Ian has been very open with us and informed us of the interest from north of the border. All we can do is monitor the situation.

"We spoke to Ian ealier this week and are certainly interested, but basically it is now up to the player."

McCaldon started his career with Livingston before moving South to join Oxford two seasons ago.

Wright has been on the look-out for a second goalkeeper since Jon Worsnop was released at the end of last season.

Meanwhile, central defender Carl Ruffer, who asked to be placed on the transfer list on Tuesday, has had a change of heart and undertaken to fight for a regular place in the Deva Stadium side.

"We had a chat with Carl and he has thankfully reconsidered his position, which is extremely pleasing," said Wright.

Ruffer will be a member of a full-strength Chester squad who face top Danish Premier League club FC Nordsjaelland in an attractive pre-season friendly at the Deva Stadium on Saturday.
