Chester FC boss Steve Burr is not panicking about the lack of signings given current player of the year Ben Heneghan came in as a trialist last pre-season.

Burr, who has brought in Ross Hannah and Tom Shaw, spoke with a couple of players this week but revealed wages were a stumbling block.

He does have a selection of trialists coming in for the start of pre-season next month and hopes those players will grab the opportunity afforded to them as Heneghan did.

The 21-year-old defender arrived in August as an unknown but went on to make 44 appearances and won his first England C cap earlier this month.

Heneghan a 'good example' and shows players are out there

“We’re still looking for a left-back, a central midfielder and someone up front: those are the areas we need but it’s ongoing and there’s not a lot to report,” said Burr.

“I went to meet a couple of players on Wednesday morning but we were miles apart really in terms of what we can offer and what they are looking for.

“We’ve got a few lads coming in for pre-season that we are interested in and I think that’s a good opportunity for us to have a proper look at them.

“There’s a lot of players out there and Ben Heneghan is a good example of one who has dropped out of the Premier League and built himself back up so it shows the players are out there.

“Ben came in on expenses, then we put him on non-contract forms and then he earned himself a deal. I’ve got no doubt that if Ben keeps working hard and continues to progress then he’s going to have a very bright future in the game.”

Meanwhile, Burr confirmed the club has still not received an enquiry for midfielder Kingsley James, who has rejected a new deal.

Burr said: “We’ve still not heard anything at all and no club has been in touch with me. It’s a bit frustrating from our point of view because we want things to be sorted so we can move on.”

Club bosses are hoping to pass the 1,000-mark for season ticket sales before the early bird discounts end tomorrow.

Supporters purchasing before the deadline will receive six free games in the 2015-16 season. Season tickets are available from the club between 10am and 4pm on weekdays. Applications can also be made via phone on 01244 371376.
