Tarporley Vics 1 Poynton 1
A HOTLY-DISPUTED but deserved late penalty gifted Poynton a draw against Vics on Saturday.
Poynton enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but Vics took the lead against the run of play.
Full-back Luke Heritage’s cross was cut out by a defender but the ball dropped invitingly to Heritage whose strike nestled into the top corner.
Vics won a penalty on 75 minutes when Matty Jones was hauled down in the box as he was about to pull the trigger. But the keeper guessed right and Henry Buckley’s spot kick was palmed away.
Then on 87 minutes, Poynton were awarded a penalty when their forward and Vics’ Steve Wright challenged in the air. To the astonishment of both teams, the referee pointed to the spot and Poynton’s number nine levelled.
Malpas 1 Maine Road Res 5
MALPAS suffered an embarrassing 5-1 home defeat to Maine Road Reserves on Saturday, allowing the visitors to leapfrog them in the Cheshire League.
Manager Robbie McWilliams was not impressed by his side’s display and made his feelings known after the game.
The first half was goal-less with both hitting the crossbar and squandering gilt-edged chances.
But the second half told a different story as Maine Road dominated and Malpas were four goals down before they scored.
A ball played through from Eddy Barlow was brought down by the right boot of Jack Oakden before he unleashed a half-volley with his left.
It was the goal of the game but no consolation to the losers.
