With the Wirral peninsula and 20 miles or so separating them, Chester FC and Tranmere Rovers have a long and storied past.

First meeting in a friendly in 1891, both clubs competed in the Combination and the Lancashire Combination until the First World War.

In 1921, Tranmere entered the Football League as founder members of Division Three North, where Chester joined them in 1931.

Over the next six decades there were frequent meetings between the two and the rivalry intensified through the 1970s and 80s until a contrast in the fortunes of the clubs.

The last competitive encounter took place on March 23, 1991 when Rovers defeated a struggling Chester side 2-0 in front of 2,705 fans at Moss Rose in Macclesfield, where the Blues spent two seasons in exile.

Despite the hiatus, the connections between the two have continued to grow with a host of players having represented both clubs.

Some hold the distinction of being revered in both camps, others have experienced success with one and not the other, while others will not be so fondly remembered.

Take a look at some of those names from the past and the present to have played for both in the gallery above.
