Chester FC boss Steve Burr remains keen on bringing Matty Hughes to the club after Fleetwood Town released the forward.

Hughes had two spells at the Swansway Chester Stadium this season, scoring five goals in 26 games.

The 22-year-old had limited first team opportunities at Highbury and Fleetwood announced yesterday he would not be offered a new deal.

Central midfielder Josh Green, who had a couple of appearances for the Blues last term, was also released.

Burr confirmed to The Chronicle he had held preliminary talks with Hughes and hopes to speak to the Wigan-born forward again next week.

“I’ve spoken to Matty and I know he’s been in discussions with Fleetwood this week to decide his future there,” said Burr.

“I’ve asked Matty to let me know what he wants to do and I’ll probably speak to him again next week and see what’s happening.”

Hughes scored five times in eight games in his first loan spell before being recalled and failed to find the net in his second spell, although he ended the season in a midfield berth.

Hughes, who was with Everton and Wigan Athletic as a youngster, moved from Cheshire Football League side Golborne Sports to Skelmersdale United in November 2012, where he scored 24 times in 58 games before Fleetwood paid an undisclosed fee for him in January 2014.
