CHESTER City last night signed Rushden and Diamonds midfielder Michael McElhatton on a month's loan.
The Irish-born player goes straight into the City squad to face Nuneaton Borough at Manor Park in the Nationwide Conference tonight.
The 26-year-old, who has been unable to gain a regular place in the Rushden side this season, joined the East Midlanders three years ago from Scarborough. He has also played for Bournemouth.
City chairman Stephen Vaughan said of the signing: "Mark Wright wanted the player to boost our squad at this important time in the club's season, so the lad has come in initially for a month, and obviously it means that there is competition now in that department."
McElhatton will be joined in the City squad tonight by his former Rushden team-mate, Shaun Carey, who signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Chester last week.
One player absent tonight will be veteran midfielder Andy Porter. He starts a two-match ban, which also means he misses Saturday's FA Umbro Trophy tie against Hereford United. Chester will also be without long-term injury victims Iain Jenkins and Carl Ruffer.
City manager Wright's team have gone seven matches unbeaten but slipped back into the relegation zone at the weekend as they had no match and teams around them took advantage by picking up points.
CHESTER CITY (probable): W Brown, Woodyatt, Lancaster, Bolland, Brabin, Carden, Carey, Blackburn, McElhatton, Whittaker, D Brown, Beesley. Subs (from): M Rose, Williams, M O'Brien, Spink, Collins, Haarhoff.
