Who are the potential stars of the future to watch out for when Chester FC host Liverpool on Wednesday? And what kind of side will the Blues face?

The game has been billed as a workout for the under-21s, who took on PSV Eindhoven and Porto at the weekend. Philippe Coutinho and Emre Can both featured against the latter having been allowed to miss the pre-season tour of Australia, Thailand and Malaysia.

Could we see them or other Premier League stars at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium? Perhaps.

Brendan Rodgers and his squad are back at Melwood this week following the tour ahead of a pre-season double-header this weekend.

Liverpool take on HJK Helsinki on Saturday with reports suggesting the manager will take his strongest team to Finland, with the remaining first-teamers part of the squad that visits Swindon Town on Sunday.

The inclusion of Coutinho and Can showed Rodgers is willing to give his stars a run out with the U21s to help bring them up to speed, so it would be no great surprise if the squad sent to Chester did feature a first-teamer or two: the game is on Liverpool's doorstep and the club has a good relationship with the Blues with the U21s staging a number of matches at the ground last season.

But even without a glimpse of big-money signings Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke, or an appearance for outcast Mario Balotelli, there will be shortage of talent on show.

Rogers believes in giving youth a chance and Michael Beale's squad will include a number of players knocking on the first-team door. The Chronicle has picked out some of those who might feature worth keeping an eye on:

Cameron Brannagan

The 19-year-old has been with the Reds since the age of seven and made a number of appearances on the bench for the first-team in the 2014-15 campaign.

An attacking midfielder comfortable with both feet, Brannagan is considered one of the brightest prospects in the academy and has represented England under-18s.

With the arrivals of Firmino and Benteke pushing him back down the pecking order, the Salford-born youngster could find himself going out on loan this season.

Jerome Sinclair

Birmingham-born forward made his first-team debut aged 16 years and six days, making him the club's youngest ever player.

He made two Premier League appearances last season as he forced himself into the first-team picture, but earlier this month it emerged he was in dispute with the club over his contract.

The 18-year-old has a year left on his current deal but he and the Reds well apart on terms on an extension, putting his future in doubt.

Ryan Kent

The winger travelled to the Far East with the first-team and is reported to be a long target for a number of Championship clubs.

Rodgers might well decide to take him to Helsinki given the 18-year-old's impressive performance for the U21s last season, which including scoring twice against rivals Everton.

Rodgers said a couple of months ago: "Ryan is a young player who has done really, really well of late and he's really maturing into a real talent."

Harry Wilson

Another who might well end up on the plane to Finland, the Corwen teenager is perhaps the most exciting talent in the academy.

Not long turned 18, Wilson has already represented the Wales national side - becoming the country's youngest full international - and the 2015-16 season could be the break-out for him.

With a lovely left foot and a real ability to drive at defences, the forward is one the brightest prospects in the UK.
