LUCAS LEIVA believes Jordan Henderson will flourish at Liverpool but insists patience is required as the midfelder adapts to his new surroundings.

The England Under-21 international has produced some mixed performances since his £16million move from Sunderland this summer.

Henderson, who opened his Reds account with a fine finish against Bolton last month, has started all six Premier League matches but has been substituted in four of them.

However, fellow midfielder Lucas has been impressed by what he’s seen of the 21-year-old and says better days lie ahead.

“I think Jordan’s playing well,” he said. “He will get more confidence when he gets more minutes and understands more the role he has to do.

“We all have to try to encourage him and give him the confidence to keep improving. We can see he has the potential to be a good player but he’s still very young. We have to try to give him time and be patient. Then we will see he is a good player.”

Lucas is ideally placed to give Henderson advice. The Brazilian endured a tough start to his Anfield career following his £5million switch from Gremio in 2007.

But the 24-year-old showed great character as well as talent to win over the doubters and his progress was recognised when he was crowned the Reds’ player of the year last season.

“I don’t blame the young players because I was in their place for a few years,” Lucas added.

“I know Jordan is English and has already adapted to the Premier League but to change clubs and move to such a big club as Liverpool is really hard.

“Everyone has their own opinions but we can see in the training sessions he likes to work.

“When you work hard every day then the opportunities will come. He will be ready to take them.

“If we don’t rush him and give him time to settle then I’m sure he will be a good player for us.”
