FORMER Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie believes few tears will be shed on the Kop at Andy Carroll’s exit to West Ham.

After a season long loan at Upton Park the centre-forward made a permanent move to the Hammers last week.

And Gillespie said: “I think the fans wish Andy Carroll well but I don’t think there will be too many fans disgruntled that he’s actually gone.

“He never really showed what he could do at Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers made it pretty clear from day one that he wasn’t going to fit in with his plans, which might have been premature but when a new manager comes in he has his philosophy and wants his own players

“Andy obviously didn’t fit that bill and I think, to be honest, the move is good for both parties. It’s good for Liverpool and I think it’s good for West Ham.”

Meanwhile the ex-Reds star believes that the club should hang on to Pepe Reina this summer.

“If Pepe was to go I think it would be a sad loss,” he said.

“Pepe Reina has been a fantastic servant for Liverpool football club and there has been a lot of speculation over the last couple of years about whether he might move on or not and it’s probably stronger this season than ever.

“It would be sad if Pepe Reina did go and not just as a player but as a character within the dressing room as well.

“With the club losing Jamie Carragher, who was a massive character in that dressing room, I think that Liverpool are looking for these characters who have the ability to get the best out of other players.”
