Tatenhall footballer Ben Woodburn scored two goals and created another as Liverpool under-18s completed the double over rivals Manchester United .

The 16-year-old former Bishop Heber High School, who in December netted in a 2-1 win against Everton in a Merseyside derby, inspired the Reds to a 3-0 victory with Yan Dhanda bagging the other goal for Neil Critchley’s side.

Woodburn, who has represented Wales under-17s, is among a group of promising youngsters who have been invited to train with the first-team squad under the watch of Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds almost took the lead in the early stages when Adam Phillips’ free-kick found Conor Masterson, who was on the bench for the first team at Exeter on Friday night.

The defender’s shot was cleared off the line, but the home side didn’t have wait long before taking the lead, Woodburn opening the scoring with a brilliant overhead kick from a Toni Gomes cross.

After 36 minutes, Liverpool and Woodburn had their second, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross finding Woodburn who finished expertly.

With 20 minutes to go Aidan Barlow came close to setting up an exciting finish, but his effort was denied by the post for the visitors.

Liverpool, though, sealed the win on 78 minutes when substitute Dhanda headed home a Woodburn ball.
