BRENDAN RODGERS praised the conduct of Liverpool supporters during their defeat to Manchester United.

United fans did not repeat the tasteless chants they aired against Wigan last weekend during the match, but after the final whistle there were clearly audible chants of “Always the victims …” and “Murderers” in response to a couple of Reds fans making aeroplane signals at the visiting supporters.

Rodgers said: “I didn't hear that. I can only comment on what I've heard.

“This is my first involvement in a game of this magnitude and I am very proud.

“The work Ian Ayre has done to lead all the tributes has been fantastic so I think Liverpool Football Club and all our supporters played their part.

“As leading iconic clubs we have an obligation morally and socially to show we that can respect and I think that was done today. What happened at the end I can't comment on. Listen, there's an intense rivalry here and we don't want that to end because that's all a part of what makes this the biggest game in British football.

“Songs from Liverpool or Manchester United supporters, any of us who have any value of humanity and human decency don't like to hear that.

“The fight goes on but certainly here at this football club we are proud of the work that has gone on.”
