NEWLY-FORMED Runcorn Linnets made an excellent debut in the North West Counties League with a comfortable 4-0 win at Ashton Town.
Andy McCoy scored the Linnets' first goal in competitive league football on 12 minutes and further second-half strikes from Mick Young, Colin Quirke and Paul Scott sealed victory.
Bootle, playing their first game at New Bucks Park on their return to the League after five years, went down to a lone Paul Fyldes goal for visitors Padiham.
Formby had a disappointing start when losing 3-0 at Maine Road and St Helens Town fared no better when conceding two goals in the last 10 minutes against newly promoted FC United. A healthy crowd of 1,723, however, provided a degree of consolation.
FA Vase winners Nantwich Town continued in winning vein when defeating Glossop North End 3-1. New signing Andy Bott netted twice on his debut with Danny Griggs' 50th minute strike sealing the victory.
Goals from Chris Melia and Dave Hanlon set Winsford United on the way to a 2-1 success over Oldham Town but Ashton Athletic went down 3-0 at Eccleshall.
