A FAMOUS face from Chester City's past is backing teenager Laurence Wilson to make an impact at the Saunders Honda Stadium.

Wilson joined City last month after being released by Everton, where he came under the watchful eye of former Chester defender and Goodison Park reserve team boss Andy Holden.

Ex-Wales international Holden is confident Wilson is more than capable of making the grade in League Two and expects the 19-year-old to be deployed in a left wing-back role.

Holden, who played more than 100 games for Chester from 1983 to 86, said: 'The Chester fans will like him and, being a Chester fan myself, hopefully he can do well and get us promotion. He's a nice lad, a good trainer who likes his football and can run all day.

'He was a pleasure to work with and he's gone to find his level now. If he does well at Chester, he will move up again, but hopefully it's with Chester in another league.'

Wilson has played for England at all levels up to and including Under-19.

Despite not making a first-team appearance for Everton, he was an unused sub in the Champions' League qualifier against Villarreal last season.

A loan spell at Mansfield Town last term yielded one goal in 14 appearances and the Field Mill outfit were keen to sign him, until Chester stepped in.

Holden, meanwhile, is glad to see his old team-mate Graham Barrow back at Chester, this time as assistant manager.

The pair played together briefly in the 1986-87 campaign and Holden said of Barrow's appointment: 'It should have happened ages ago. Graham knows the league he is in and it can only be good for Chester. I'm glad Mark Wright has taken him on.'
