EVERTON great Kevin Ratcliffe believes Arouna Kone would be a good signing for the club.

New manager Roberto Martinez has yet to add to the squad he inherited from David Moyes but has been linked with a large number of players.

Rumours continue to circulate that Martinez will look to raid former club Wigan Athletic for new signings and Kone is among those mentioned as possible targets.

Ratcliffe says there are three key areas for the Spaniard to focus on in the transfer window – goalkeeper, midfield and attack.

The most successful skipper in Goodison history wants to see a quality stopper brought in to provide competition for Tim Howard and believes some younger players could freshen up the Blues’ midfield.

And he believes it’s essential Martinez adds firepower to Everton’s attack – and Kone could be the man to do it.

“He looks decent and could be a handful,” said Ratcliffe.

“He looks like he could handle it (at Everton).

“But it takes a different type of player. It is alright doing it at Wigan when the pressure is off from the supporters.”

Ratcliffe added: “He definitely needs another midfield player.

“Tim Howard will need replacing sooner or later and we need to put him under pressure to perform.

“We definitely need a striker. One of the things we missed last year was knocking the ball in consistently.”

Ratcliffe reckons that Everton would find it hard to turn down big money offers for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini.

Fellaini is said to have a £24m sell out clause in his contract which can be triggered by a club in the Champions League.

Arsenal are reported to be leading the chase whilst Manchester United are rumoured to be interested in Baines.

“It’s not about Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines wanting to stick around,“ he said.

“I think if big bids come in for them then inevitably they’re going to go.

“It will have to be decent bids though for the club to allow it to happen.”
