Kidderminster Harriers boss Gary Whild fancies his chances of getting one over his good friend and former manager Steve Burr on Saturday.

Whild had three-and-a-half years as Burr’s assistant at Aggborough and was put on gardening leave when Kiddy sacked the now Chester FC boss last January.

Andy Thorn lasted just eight weeks in the job and Harries, who have had a turbulent 12 months with on and off-field departures, turned to Whild, who spent five years managing Redditch United.

He has had to contend with the loss of Chey Dunkley and Nathan Blissett, who have been sold to ease cashflow concerns, so it is to his credit Harriers are still very much in the play-off picture.

Strong away form has been the basis for that and a 1-0 victory at Aldershot Town midweek made it four straight wins on the road for Whild.

“I’m still good friends with Steve and we had some great times here which I enjoyed,” he said. “But we will be doing our best, as I’m sure he will, to win the game. We’ve had a good run away from home so we’re positive and we go there full of confidence.”

Dunkley and Blissett initially left on loan to help the financial situation and now those deals have been made permanent, Whild has been able to strengthen.

He signed ex-Wrexham striker Danny Wright from Gateshead, took Shrewsbury Town midfielder Aaron Wildig on loan and remains keen on a return for veteran and Kiddy favourite Lee Hughes.

Wright and Wildig started in the win at Aldershot and Whild was impressed with how the pair slotted in.

He said: “Aaron and Danny were excellent, in terms of their ability, the little bit of nous that they give us - which we’ve been lacking - and how they help the young lads in the squad.

“Danny was looking to be a threat all night and he’s got that little bit of experience so that even if he does miss, he’s going to keep throwing his hat in the ring. That takes a bit of pressure off some of the younger lads.”

Chester came from two-goals down at Kiddy back in August to secure a 2-2 draw. Callum Gittings and Dunkley netted inside 10 minutes but late goals from Craig Hobson and Wayne Riley earned the Blues a point.
