THE Linnets will have to make a return journey to Lancaster City to play the Nationwide North game which was called off on Tuesday.

Runcorn had reached the Giant Axe ground well in time for kick-off but home club players were held up in tailbacks following the closure of the M6 near Lancaster after a major accident.

The referee put back the start, setting a cut-off time of 8.45pm.

However, by 8.25pm, Lancaster had only six players present and one of them was injured, leaving the referee with no option but to postpone the game.

Conference officials have told Run-corn the match must be rearranged.

But an investigation has been launched and the league will discuss the matter at a routine board meeting next week. Runcorn have e-mailed a letter of complaint over the issue but under league rules will have their transport costs refunded.

Runcorn club chairman Dr Dave Robertson said: 'A lot of effort was put in by us to get there on time and to deal with the prevailing road conditions with players getting off work early - only to be faced with a situation where the home club didn't have enough players.'

Runcorn have confirmed Saturday's league game against Gainsborough will take place at Halton Stadium (3pm).

Suspensions for Tony McMillan (three games), Tom Spearritt (two games) and Barry Jones (one game) will now start this weekend.
