LIVERPOOL made the right decision not trying to re-sign Michael Owen.

As much as people will say we’re desperate for a striker that would have been the wrong move.

It’s not just the fact he played for Manchester United. I don’t begrudge players going where the best contract is, but it was more the manner in which he left Liverpool which upset a lot of fans.

One of his ex team-mates, Jason McAteer, came out and questioned Owen’s appetite for the game and so would I. If he was that keen he would have got himself a club by July 1, had a proper pre-season and been ready for when the Premier League started.

Waiting until this point before joining a club doesn’t send out the right signals. As it is he will need six to eight weeks now to get up to speed for Stoke.

There was speculation about us going for Alessandro Del Piero but I don’t believe that was ever a goer.

I couldn’t see him playing here when he was 25 let alone 37 – he’s not suited to the Premier League.

I can’t think of any free agents who I’d really want but we might have to take a gamble on someone.
