Matty Hughes wants to break into the Fleetwood Town first team and start scoring goals, but would like to return to Chester FC if things don't work out.

Hughes, 22, netted five times in eight games before Graham Alexander recalled him on Wednesday morning after injuries left the Fleetwood manager short on options up front.

Steve Burr has already confirmed his interest in re-signing the Wigan-born forward should he made available again in January.

Hughes told The Chronicle he was sorry to leave the Swansway Chester Stadium and thanked the management team, squad and supporters for making him feel so welcome.

Hughes said: "Obviously I'm sad to leave the lads and the gaffer and all of his backroom team because I got on with them all so well.

"From the first game all the lads all came over and introduced themselves, shook hands and spoke to me.

"I travelled down in a car school with Mahony (Craig Mahon) and Charny (Kieran Charnock), and it's hard to leave the lads behind but I just want to do as well as I can for whoever I'm playing for and hopefully things work out with Fleetwood.

"My gaffer at Fleetwood told me to go to Chester and show what I can do and that's what I have done.

"The idea was to get some games and some goals and I ended up getting five goals in eight games so it couldn't have gone any better for me really.

"I saw it as a step back to take two steps forward if you like because I know all about non-league from being with Skem but it was the first time I had played in the Conference and I thought I did well.

"I want to go back to Fleetwood and hit the ground running and do as well for them as I have done for Chester."

Hughes moved to Fleetwood in January and has made a handful of first team appearances for the Cod Army.

He told The Chronicle he now wants to regular football and said he would be keen to come back to Chester if he cannot get that at Fleetwood.

"Of course I would," said Hughes.

"Chester have got a really good following and it surprised me a bit to be honest. I know scoring goals helps but I felt like I got on with the fans and I want to thank them for making me so welcome.

"I spoke to Steve and he said that if it doesn't quite go to plan for me at Fleetwood then there will be a place for me back at Chester and that's nice to hear from him."
