CREWE FC striker Gary Gordon has had a week to remember.

The 17-year-old, known as Flash, was invited to have a trial with Yeovil Town reserves and impressed so much he was asked to stay on for the League Two side's friendly at Dorchester.

Gordon came on as a late substitute and laid on the Glovers' second goal in their 2-0 win.

Crewe FC manager Ian O'Reilly said: 'It's been a hell of a week for Flash.

'Yeovil were really impressed with him and it's an incredible jump from playing with us to that level. They have now asked Witton Albion to have a look at him so they can monitor his progress with a club at a higher standard.'

As well as Gordon, O'Reilly believes he has other players capable of playing in a higher league.

'We have a young right-back, Andrew Gibbons, who I think is an even better prospect than Flash and I think Lee Westwood is also capable of going on.

'You have mixed feelings because we want the lads to improve and it's a feather in our cap and shows we must be doing something right. On the other hand, we'd also like the lads to stay and help us do well, too.'

Crewe's friendly programme continued with a 1-0 win at Lostock Gralam on Saturday with Gareth Brooks netting the only goal of the game.

O'Reilly said: 'It was hard to judge the game because I looked at 20-odd players and goalkeeper Steve Harding was the only player to have a full game.

'My assistant Gary Wood and I need to start knocking the squad down a bit and deciding on a core of 18 who will make up the first-team squad.

'I think there will be some sad faces as there will be a few from last year's squad who do not make it.'

O'Reilly will start to trim his squad down by naming a 15-man travelling party when Crewe continue their preparations for the new season at West Cheshire League side Shaftesbury this Saturday.
