George Thomson is ready to commit his future to a club he sees as having the potential to reach the Football League.

Chester FC boss Steve Burr signed the attacking midfielder, who turns 23 next month, from Kings Lynn Town in January on a short-term deal.

Thomson worked himself into the team and marked his first start with the winner at Torquay United but an ankle injury then sidelined him for five weeks.

He returned to the squad for the final two games of the season and caught the eye in the 5-3 defeat of Nuneaton Town last weekend, wrapping up the win with a stunning goal.

His performances so far have excited fans and the manager, and Thomson told The Chronicle he would have no hesitation in putting pen to paper.

“I think the club has the potential to go up again and obviously I’d be delighted to be a part of that,” Thomson said.

“I think the manager and the way he plays is the right way to play football. He likes to play it on the floor and get forward and I think the club’s got everything it needs to go forward.

“I’d be delighted to stay but at the end of the day it’s not my decision. I can only play as well as I can every time I go out on the pitch but there’s no decisions as of yet.

“I was delighted to finally put the injury behind me and it took long longer than I thought because I didn’t think the injury was that serious really when I first did it. I think the worst part about it was the timing.

“I’d just got into the team, scored at Torquay and then the following game I get injured so that was gutting for me.

“I was really disappointed with the timing of it but I’m just happy it didn’t rule me out for the rest of the season and I was able to get back out there and get some minutes under my belt before the end of the season.”

Burr had a close look at Thomson in pre-season but although he impressed on trial the club was not in a position to sign him and he returned to Kings Lynn, where he scored 22 times in the first half of the 2014-15 season, convincing Burr to resume his interest when the transfer window opened.

He made the step up two divisions without too much fuss and Thomson believes a full pre-season can benefit both him and the club.

He said: “I’ve come up from a couple of leagues below and I’ve noticed the tempo and the speed is a lot quicker and I’ve had to adjust to it but hopefully I can continue to do that and hopefully next season I’ll be able to do it as well.

“I think everyone has a week or two weeks off to recover but then likes to get back into it and do their own stuff over the summer to make sure they’re in some half-decent shape to come back for pre-season.

“I came in during January and knew where the club was at last season and this season has been massive progress what I’ve been told.

“I think everyone’s happy with where we’ve finished.”
