MIDFIELDER Mike Garrity has joined Vauxhall after being released as a cost-cutting measure by cash-strapped Runcorn.

Ironically, he made his Motormen debut against former team-mate Tony McMillen on Saturday, who was turning out in goal for Lancaster City for the first time after also being cut from the Linnets' squad.

Replacing veteran Carl Nesbitt in the centre of the park, Garrity enjoyed a winning start and played a part in Vauxhall's first goal.

Manager Owen Brown said: 'Mike's someone we knew well and had an eye on for next season, but Runcorn's financial plight enabled us to bring him in a bit sooner. He may as well get a very small wage from us rather than nothing at all from them. He fitted in well and it's no surprise as he lives on the same street as Anthony Wright and is James Glendenning's best mate.'

Despite securing a crucial win, Vauxhall were unable to get the bumper Easter gate chairman Alan Bartlam had called for during the week.

The Ellesmere Port public seemed to snub the Motormen supremo's plea for support as a season-low 155 turned up.

The game clashed with televised coverage of the England v Northern Ireland World Cup qualifier and Bartlam told spectators who did show their faces that their support was 'Even more appreciated in the circumstances.'
