Former Chester City FC captain Stephen Vaughan jnr has been bailed after being charged by officers investigating the death of Liverpool policeman PC Neil Doyle.

Vaughan, of Tower Way in Woolton, appeared in Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday afternoon charged with perverting the course of justice and driving without insurance.

Vaughan, 30, was released on bail with the conditions that he surrender his passport to Merseyside Police, reside at an address in Tower Way and report to Admiral Street Police Station three times a week. He will next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on September 23.

The boxing promoter - who was on the books of Liverpool FC before signing for Chester in 2004 - had two spells at the Deva Stadium between 2004-07 and 2008-2010, and is the son of former Blues owner and chairman Stephen Vaughan snr.

PC Doyle was allegedly attacked by three men following a night out in the city.

Christopher Spendlove, 30, of Brandearth Hey, Stockbridge Village, is charged with PC Doyle’s murder along with another ex-footballer Andrew Taylor, 28, of Cherry Tree Road, Huyton.

A third suspect, Timmy Donovan, 30, of Walsingham Road, Childwall, was extradited from Germany.

All three men are also charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding PC Doyle’s colleagues PCs Michael Steventon and Robert Marshall during the same incident.

A four week trial is due to begin at Liverpool Crown Court on June 22.
