Chester FC boss Steve Burr insists he’s not surprised to see this weekend’s visitors Forest Green Rovers setting the pace in the Vanarama National League.

Renewable energy tycoon Dale Vince has ploughed millions into the club since becoming majority shareholder in 2010 in pursuit of a place in the Football League.

When the chairman lost patience with Dave Hockaday, Ady Pennock’s appointment as manager came as a shock to most but the ex-Welling United boss has led Rovers to the top of the table.

Pennock’s side beat Bromley 2-1 on Monday to extend their 100% start to the season, which has seen them open up a four point cushion after seven straight wins.

Burr, who was a target for Forest Green when Hockaday was sacked, feels that’s where the club should be given how much Vince has invested.

"It’s not really a surprise to me and when you think about the resources that have been given to them I’m amazed that they’re still in this division but that just goes to show you how difficult it is to get out of it," said Burr.

"Ady Pennock’s doing a good job up there now and he seems to have got the right formula together. We know it’s going to be difficult but we’re looking to improve ourselves and that will be our next test.

"It’s a great start for them and we know how formidable they’ll be with the squad that they have and the players they’ve brought in again through the summer.

"We know how tough it will be and we’ve got a real tough run of games coming up now and these games will be a real test for us but we’ll be looking forward to that."

The Blues have failed to pick up a point in four meetings with Forest Green since the club returned to the top tier of non-league football in 2013.

Jon Parkin, who scored twice in a 4-1 win at Chester last time the clubs met in April, will again lead the line with Aaron O’Connor, who has four goals since his arrival from Newport County, another threat.

Rovers are the first team to since Rushden & Diamonds in 1998-99 to start the season at this level with seven successive victories.
